PRF seizes R$ 3,3 million of smuggled cigarettes

Smuggling shall be punished with up to 5 years of imprisonment

The Federal Highway Police (PRF) seized this afternoon a double truck carrying about 600.000 packages of smuggled cigarettes in Ponta Grossa. The total load estimated at R$ 3,3 million was brought illegally from Paraguay and seized at BR-373.

As reported by the PRF, the 34 year-old-truck driver demonstrated nervousness during the approach and his reaction called the officials attention who conducted a close scrutiny which helped them to find the products.

Besides the driver, other three men who supported the smuggler, warning of the presence of police along the way, were also arrested.

The crime of smuggling is punishable from two to five years in prison. The PRF referred the incident to the Federal Police Station in Ponta Grossa.
